The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers. The State College/University Park location held a two-stage conference and related events by five Centre County regional organizations. The first intercollegiate debate was held by the men's team at Penn State in 1898. Thereafter, men's and women's teams competed across the nation, debating on a variety of topics. Penn State teams saw great success at tournaments at University of Pittsburgh, Case Western Reserve University, Ursinus College, University of California, and even Oxford University.
